Street League 2015: Nyjah and Luan

After 6 straight Street League wins Nyjah Huston was finally dethroned by the Brazilan golden child, Luan Oliviera.
There was a bit of controversy over the consistency of the judging and the social media world was very vocal about it.
No matter what, it is hard to argue that Luan "didn't deserve" the 1st Place trophy. He skated his heart out and pulled the winning trick under an incredible amount of pressure. Congrats Luan on your first SLS win!

Street League 2015: Decenzo and Torey

Ryan Decenzo and Torey Pudwill are two of my favorite guys on the course and both happen to ride for Red Bull. Some of the hardest tricks of the weekend were performed by these guys and a few they only landed in practice. Check it.

Street League 2015: Part 3

It's been almost a year since my last post which is somewhat of a bummer.

When I started "Broahtography" in 2007 I was putting up posts every couple of weeks mostly of street sessions with the homies. Now when I look at the past 3 years of the website there are only 2 posts per year and they are all from X-Games and Street League events. I guess it's pretty rad to be shooting photos of the best skateboarders in the world, but I really miss being at street spots and getting sequences of my friends who are trying to come up in the skate world.

I plan on getting back to my roots and shooting some pics from the streets, so look forward to that...

Anyways, enjoy the animated sequences.

Street League 2014 at USC Galen Center

After the Active and Val Surf team went nuts and knocked the ZJ guys out of the finals it was time to head to downtown LA to try catching the finals of Street League. We heard that the fire department had shut the doors and were not letting anyone else in, but that didn't stop us from trying. After walking past security with my camera in hand and wristband still intact from the last contest I was able to get a pretty decent angle yesterday in the photo pit for the Street League 2014 finals. Nyjah took home the trophy...again. Anyways, here are the highlights:

U.S. Open: Shop Battle Van Doren Invitational

Almost another full year since a post... What can I say? Life has gotten in the way.

Yesterday got me sparked to dust off the old Canon 7D and snap a few stills and sequences...
I successfully witnessed two separate skate contests in two different cities in one day.

At around 11:30am Squirrel, Keiichi and I drove out to Huntington Beach's US Open of Surfing to watch the ZJ Skate Team compete in the Van Doren Invitational Shop Battle. Lots of fun to see the crew ripping this amazing bowl apart!

Taking it back to the streets...

It was exactly 10 years ago that I moved back to Los Angeles, California from the suburbs of Detroit Michigan.

August 11th, 2003... I remember because it was the day after my brother's birthday and it was the epic end to a road trip across the country from the state known as "America's High Five". I started working at ZJ Boarding House in Santa Monica the next day.

Skateboarding in L.A. has changed a lot since then.

I remember when the closest skatepark was in Hawthorn, a 20 minute drive on the freeway into "the Dirty" as we called it.
Shit was pretty sketchy. There were lights until 9pm, so after we closed the shop at 7:00 we would pile as many groms as possible into the White Chevy Blazer and skate the Dirty Thorn until the lights shut off.

Other than that we were skating the streets. We would talk about it all week.
We would watch the newest skate video and figure out where each spot was and map our route for the weekend.
We were jumping fences, skating school playgrounds, abandoned warehouses, getting kicked out by security, dealing with cops, shooting photos, and making edits for fun.

Since then 5 or more parks and plazas have opened in the area and it has really made it too easy to skate.
"The Cove" in Santa Monica, The Venice Skatepark, Stoner Plaza, Westchester Berrics Plaza, Rancho, etc.

In this post I wanted to highlight the fact that skateboarders these days need to make more of an effort than ever to get back to the streets and get sparked like we used to... Even if it is just for fun.

X-Games 2013: Streeet League

This year's X-Games street competition was different than it has been in the past. The Street League Skateboarding format and judging was used and it seems like this will be the case from now on. Unfortunately this was also the last year that the contest is held in Los Angeles. The next 4 years will be in Austin, TX. photo T-PudsLipslideSwCrooks.jpg photo LuanSwitchTre.jpg photo NyjahFullCabBackLip.jpg photo NyjahFullCabBkNoseblunt.jpg photo NyjahKfFrontNoseSlide.jpg

X GAMES 2012 - Skate Street (part 2)

This year's X-Games was insane! The mega-ramp contest had some ridiculous never-been-done tricks, and super park, half-pipe, and game of SKATE was fun to watch as well. But of course skateboard street contest is one of my favorites to watch... so I decided to capture it with the 7D.

Ishod Wair and Nyjah Huston made these backside flips look easy...
